Our Favorite Nature Escape in Panama City Beach
St. Andrews State Park is one of our favorite places in Panama City Beach. We visit every time we're in town and somehow never get tired of it. Located at the eastern end of Panama City Beach, about a 30–40-minute drive from The Beach Break, the park has beautiful white sand, turquoise water, pine forests, and nature trails.
We especially enjoy walking beneath the pine trees, breathing in their fresh scent, and watching wildlife away from the busy beaches.
Swimming, Snorkeling, and Watching Marine Life
The park has over 1.5 miles of white-sand beaches, protected dunes, and some of the clearest water in the area. Walk farther along the shoreline, away from the main beach access points, and you'll find stretches of sand and turquoise water that almost look like the Maldives.
There are two main swimming areas: the open Gulf beach and a sheltered lagoon near the jetties. The lagoon is popular with families with young children and may offer an alternative when conditions are rough on the Gulf side, provided swimming is permitted.
Boardwalks provide access to the beach without crossing the protected dunes. Several areas are accessible to visitors with strollers or limited mobility, and beach wheelchairs are available for those who need them.
I can spend ages standing on the fishing pier, looking into the deeper water near the channel. Sometimes you can see entire schools of fish, rays, and even sharks or barracudas swimming below. I always find myself looking for something new, wondering what might appear next.
The rocky jetties are popular for snorkeling and scuba diving. Fish gather among the rocks, including sheepshead and angelfish, and you may also spot rays or other marine life. Always check swimming conditions and beach flags, especially near the jetties, where currents can be strong.
Nature Trails, Biking, and Wildlife

Away from the beach, the park has walking trails through pine forests and around freshwater lakes. The smell of pine needles, the shade of the trees, and the chance to spot wildlife make these walks one of our favorite parts of every visit.
Two marked trails are worth exploring.
- Heron Pond Trail takes you through the pine forest, where you can enjoy the shade and listen to birds.
- Gator Lake Trail follows the lake, where you may spot alligators, turtles, herons, and egrets.
We've also found smaller paths through the wooded areas that aren't always shown on visitor maps. We enjoy following these quieter routes and seeing where they lead. Stay on established paths, and respect any signs or restricted areas.
Keep an eye out for deer, pelicans, ospreys, bald eagles, and owls. Wildlife sightings depend on the season and a little luck, so bring binoculars if you enjoy birdwatching.
Cycling is another way to explore the park. There's a two-mile paved road, and bicycles are available to rent at the Camp Store. Bikes must stay on the roads rather than the walking trails and boardwalks.
Take a Ferry to Shell Island
The Shell Island Ferry departs from St. Andrews State Park and takes about 15 minutes to reach the island. It's an easy way to visit one of the most beautiful natural beaches in the area without renting a boat.
Once there, you can swim, snorkel, look for shells, or simply walk along the shoreline. Shell Island is undeveloped, with no shops, restaurants, or other visitor facilities, so pack water, snacks, and sunscreen.
Ferry service depends on the season and weather. Check the schedule and book tickets on the Shell Island Ferry website.
Plan Your Visit
We recommend bringing lunch, plenty of water, comfortable walking shoes, and a camera. If you're planning to explore the trails and spend time at the beach, it's worth setting aside most of the day.
The park has restrooms, outdoor showers, picnic areas, concession stores, and facilities for visitors with limited mobility.

A Quiet Day at St. Andrews State Park
Some days, we come here without much of a plan. We find a quiet spot, watch the birds, and enjoy being outdoors without rushing anywhere.
If you're staying at The Beach Break, we hope you'll have a chance to experience this part of Panama City Beach. It's a place we genuinely love and always look forward to returning to.
